An invitation to linger

several white ceramic bowls float in a pool of blue water

I recently spent time with Clinamen, an art installation at the Park Avenue Armory. Hundreds of ceramic bowls drift in a pool of water. When two or more touch, they ring.

The premise is simple. The experience is vast.

When you stay with it, your attention changes. You begin to notice details that were invisible before: subtle differences in sound, colors in the shadows, shifting constellations of bowls. The work hasn't become more complex. You've become more perceptive.

That's the inspiration behind my new class Micro Macro.

Each class is devoted to a single movement. By reducing the number of variables, we increase our capacity to perceive. We'll return to the same movement again and again—not to perfect it, but because each return reveals something new. We'll stay with it long enough to discover its richness. One lesson becomes many.

The same principle has been on my mind in relation to Resource Reserve: to create an experience where you have time to savor and be with memories and things that are dear to you. Sarah, one of the participants in Resource Reserve, described her experience more beautifully than I could. With her permission, I'm sharing her words below.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I signed up for Rebecca’s Resource classes, but based on what I’ve experienced in her Feldenkrais classes, I knew there would be something wonderful revealed. And that was true.

Each session we’ve focused on a different resource, from places to people to words and more.

We have time to think about the resource ahead of time - but if life gets in the way, and you don’t have time to reflect ahead of time, the sessions work beautifully to allow you to find and explore your resource during the session. And the addition of Kristyn’s music enhances the experience of shifting into another frame - the notes and rhythms are so well suited to exploring resources.

I’ve located people and places and sensations that I had not thought about in years, if ever, and in each case it was a revelation to find the resource and remember a key time or experience - and to be able to access that resource in the future. I’ve found treasures among my memories, and having these resources revealed and accessible has also increased my awareness of what kinds of experiences to seek in the future.

As the years roll on it’s an absolute rush, a wonderful thing, to rediscover these gems.”

I hope you'll join me in July as we make a little more room for attention, curiosity, and discovery. Because of the irregularity of summer schedules, most classes are open to single-session drop-ins. Come whenever you can.
